As young men, Bernard and I were fortunate to become related by our marrying two cousins, Sheila and (my now dear-departed) Mary, belonging to the wide and cohesive Rowland clan. So my abiding memories of Bernard are of the perfect husband and father whose genial presence, whether as host or guest, was a big contribution to many a family gathering over the years. From other tributes it is clear that we all mourn a man who was loved and admired in every sphere of life in which he had a role. He will indeed be sadly missed by many.
